President Li Jiancheng Leads CSU Delegation to Australia and New Zealand

From November 30 to December 6, President Li Jiancheng led a CSU delegation on a visit to Australia and New Zealand, engaging with universities, research institutions, and enterprises. The visit featured meetings with the Chinese Consulates-General in Melbourne and Auckland, an exchange event for overseas young scholars, and meetings with CSU alumni.

In Australia, President Li met with senior leaders of Monash University, including President Sharon Pickering, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) and Managing Vice President Craig Jefferey, and Vice President Sunny Yang, and visited CSU students studying there, including those enrolled in the eight-year clinical medicine program. CSU and Monash University signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on research collaboration in green metallurgy and reached agreement on enhancing student training, strengthening cooperation in mining engineering, materials engineering, civil engineering, and clinical medicine, as well as advancing scholar exchanges.Zhu Wan, Director-General of the Department of Science and Technology of Hunan Province, and Bian Lei, General Manager of China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC) Resources Australia, also participated in the meetings.At Rio Tinto’s Bundoora Technical Development Centre, President Li met with Stuart Watson, Head of the Innovation Office,during which both sides expressed their shared commitment to expanding research collaboration and accelerating the translation of research outcomes, grounded in a solid foundation and close alignment in mining engineering.

In New Zealand, President Li met with John Morgan, Transition Chief Executive of Earth Sciences New Zealand, to explore cooperation in geothermal exploration and utilization, as well as in land, marine, and climate monitoring. The two sides signed an MOU to advance joint student training and collaborative research.During his visit to the University of Auckland, President Li held in-depth discussions with Richard Clarke, Dean of Engineering and Design, Wei Gao, Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand (FRSNZ) and Fellow of Engineering New Zealand (FEngNZ), and Stephen Howie, Associate Dean (International), School of Medicine, on expanding cooperation in materials engineering, civil engineering, and clinical medicine.

Meeting with the University of Auckland

President Li and the delegation also paid courtesy visits to the Chinese Consulates-General in Melbourne and Auckland, where he held discussions with Consuls-General Fang Xinwen, Chen Shijie, and other officials. The exchanges centered on deepening collaboration with universities and research institutions and further strengthening the bridging role of China-Australia and China-New Zealand education and people-to-people exchanges.

At the Overseas Young Scholars Exchange Forum, President Li and the delegation met with more than 100 young scholars from prominent universities and research institutions in Australia and New Zealand to introduce CSU’s talent policies and invite outstanding scholars to join the university.

In meetings with the Australia Alumni Association and alumni representatives in New Zealand, President Li expressed his gratitude for alumni’s long-term support for their alma mater.He emphasized the vital role alumni play in the university’s development and encouraged them to uphold and promote the spirit of the university motto while strengthening ties with CSU. He further called on alumni associations to serve as effective bridges, fostering exchanges and cooperation between CSU and universities and research institutions in Australia and New Zealand and contributing to academic exchanges between China and Australia, and between China and New Zealand.

The delegation included the Office of Budget and Finance, the Graduate School, the Department of Hospital Administration, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and the School of Civil Engineering.
